Andrzej Wajda was born in Suwalki, Poland on March 6, 1926. After World War II, he graduated from the Film School in Lodz and began making films. He directed more than 40 films during his lifetime including A Generation, Kanal, Ashes and Diamonds, Danton, A Love in Germany, Katyn, The Revenge, mostrar más Tatarak, Walesa: Man of Hope, and Afterimage. Man of Marble won the International Federation of Film Critics prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Man of Iron won the Golden Palm at Cannes. He received the Japanese Imperial Prize for his contribution to film in 1996, an honorary Academy Award in 2000, and lifetime achievement awards from the film festivals in Venice in 1998 and Berlin in 2006. A symbolic depiction of hell on Earth, set in the last days of the Warsaw uprising in 1944. Lieutenant Zadra is commanding a company of 43 men in a desperate battle amidst the ruins. Facing German offense and cut off from their comrades, Zadra is commanded to retreat his men through the sewer system (‘kanal’). Zadra and his men are reluctant to do so, as it would indicate that they have lost the battle, but decide to obey the orders.
