This collection features short stories about black boys on the verge of young manhood, each finding himself at some sort of crossroads where a decision of conscience or maturity must be made. Michael's school assignment is to write about someone he admires; he considers "Cool Dave" until he realizes Dave is a drug dealer. In "Young Scholar," William is an academic leader who doesn't understand why his best friend keeps cutting him down; he learns that there are times when a friend must be let go. The lessons and uplifting messages are often as subtle as a klunk on the head, but the intended audience won't quibble; they'll appreciate a book about boys like themselves. This was my first read from some of these authors, and I must say, they brought their A-game! I don't normally read horror, but I decided to step out of my comfort zone, and try something new. I am truly happy that I did, because this book was amazing. The characters jump off the page, and scared the fool out of me. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a thrilling ride, a good horror story, or just want to step out of the box.
