Devil Sent the Rain is the third book in the Detective Billy Able series, but reading this one without having read the previous two was no problem. Honestly, I was so thrilled with this book that I'm glad that I have book two to read as well.

As a big fan of books with a story that takes place in the American South was I instantly hooked with this story about a young woman in a wedding dress that is found murdered in a car. For Billy Able is this case a real shocker, the women in question, Caroline Lee, was his old sweetheart from when he was young. The typical Romeo and Juliet romance, a poor boy meets a rich girl. Now he must solve her murder.

I found Devil Sent the Rain to the kind of book that is hard to put down and the investigation into Caroline Lee's life. She recently left her fiance, so why was she dressed in a wedding dress? And the members of her family is acting odd, from her cold-hearted mother to the crazy aunt who never got over the disappearance of her son Finn. Billy and his new partner Frankie Malone has to really dig to find the answers.

I really liked this book and I can't wait to read more books in this series!

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through Edelweiss for an honest review!

I was absolutely thrilled to read A Little Death in Dixie by Lisa Turner since I have read Devil Sent the Rain book three in this series. I love that the story is set in Memphis, for some reason do I love reading stories set in the American South, especially crime stories. And, this one was no exception.

Like in Devil Sent the Rain must Billy Able solve a mystery that involves women he knows. In this case, it's a woman that Billy for years helped getting out of problems with the law (drinking and driving together is never a good idea), but now she has disappeared. She has done it before, but this time it seems to be more serious like someone wants to get rid of her.

This book is good, I quite liked this story, there were some slower moments when I felt that I wanted to speed up the investigations, also it was hardly surprising to learn who this books big bad was. However, there were some surprising moments towards the end of the book and all and all did I quite like this book and can't wait to read The Gone Dead Train that is waiting on my kindle app. And, I do hope more books will be written about Billy Abel because he is such a fabulous character!

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review!

Memphis homicide detective Billy Able and his partner Frankie Malone are assigned to investigate the murder of a prominent local attorney and member of one of the Old South’s aristocratic families. Billy and Caroline, the murder victim, were lovers for a brief time during their teenage years, but despite this conflict of interest, he is kept on the case.

Caroline’s mother and brother do not seem to be particularly troubled by her death, and they greet Billy with hostility. Caroline’s father and grandmother are saddened by the loss but suffering from dementia and not much help. A helpful cousin seems to be more concerned about a family member that disappeared five years ago, and at points, Billy’s emotional attachment to the victim threatens to hamper the investigation.

“Devil Sent the Rain” is a well-crafted mystery. Turner sprinkles enough clues to give readers a chance to solve the murder. But are things as they seem or are some of the events red herrings designed to confuse the reader. The motive and identity of the murderer remain just out of reach, cleverly maintaining readers’ interest until close to the end.

Turner’s depiction of the aristocratic family is convincing. In contrast to many mysteries, Turner also gives Billy’s partner, Malone, a meaningful role. My only complaint is that Turner, like many authors I have read recently, seems to have a need to tell us how life turned out for each of the supporting characters. The case is solved and the story over, but the book continues for another fifteen pages.

It was my decision to continue reading to the end, so I suppose it’s my fault if I am dissatisfied. Unfortunately, I know the Zeigarnik effect would have pestered me no end if I had failed to read through to the end. Still, it’s an unfortunate choice to have to make at the end of such a good book: Read fifteen slightly boring pages at the risk of being disappointed or wonder what happened.

This book was great. I live in Memphis and some of the spots and scenes were perfectly written to really put me in those places.
