This was a refreshing take on the Regency romance genre, and I enjoyed the emotional depth of the story. The main characters were winning and the story was heartfelt.
Lady Elizabeth has always known that she is a disappointment to her parents. When she is unable to accomplish a marriage to either of the gentlemen they have picked out for her, her father's actions nearly ruin the entire family and Elizabeth is left with only her facade of being the perfect society lady.
Lady Walmsley, an elderly friend from London, decides that she needs to save Elizabeth from her own life. She spirits her away from the family's country estate with the help of Christopher "Kit," Lord Cantwell, an intriguing young earl who quickly makes it his mission to help Elizabeth break out of her perfect mold. The relationship that these two discover is very sweet. I like that they didn't have the major misunderstandings that often keep couples apart in this genre. A lot of the dramatic tension in this book comes more from Elizabeth's own emotional baggage and the work she has to do to recover. I can respect that kind of storyline, because it's realistic.

The book could have been just a little shorter and possibly been even more effective, but it was easy reading and didn't take too long to finish. Near the beginning in particular I noticed some clunky exposition-as-dialogue that didn't come off very naturally, but for the most part I enjoyed the writing and look forward to future works from this author.

Sweet Regency romance... While at first it seems like the two main characters are only compatible as sparring partners, once the plot really got going, I appreciated that they functioned well as a team and weren't subject to the usual misunderstandings and miscommunications that plague many plots. The stakes were interesting in this plot, involving the interference of the Prince Regent himself. I did think that the conclusion of the book was a bit too lengthy. Once the major problems had been cleared up, there wasn't quite enough energy left to sustain the story through to its actual ending. But it was easy reading, and the pages fly by in this one!

I was able to read this thanks to NetGalley and Covenant Communications.
The characters in this book were nice, and I would enjoy reading something else from the pen of this author to see what she could do with a more realistic plot. Unfortunately, I found the plot of "Wager for a Wife" to be so contrived as to be insupportable. It's not just that the grandfather made a ridiculous bet that could maybe, barely, conceivably be stretched to apply to future generations, it's that all the members of the current generation take it so very seriously. I understand the concept of "honor" as it applied in historical times, and that it is very different from what we might consider necessary today, but I think this plot goes beyond even the historical context. It is laughable that anyone even in that society would consider it honorable for someone to jilt her fiance and marry a complete stranger because of a vaguely worded wager made between a couple of rogues decades back. I also thought there was a contradiction between Louisa's feminist beliefs (as in, I should be held to the same standard of honor as the men) with her willingness to accept that the men's definition of honor was infallible.
Furthermore, the man who wants to hold her to it is much too nice to have suggested it; it's not really consistent with the way his character is written.
There were also some jarring anachronisms in dialogue.
However, the book was easy to read and I enjoyed the secondary characters and the general writing style well enough to give it three stars. The trope of a couple falling in love in spite of an arranged marriage can be a fun one, and it worked well enough here, if only the spur to set the relationship going had been slightly easier to swallow.

Karen Tuft is definitely a favorite author! I’ve loved her Jennings family series and this book is no exception. With her characteristic slow burn romance, sympathetic characters, and a hint of mystery, I was completely hooked.

This story revolves around Rebecca Jennings, the youngest Jennings sister. She has long awaited her London season which has been put off for several years. While taking a shortcut through the neighboring estate, she’s startled by the new owner causing her to fall off a stile and break her ankle.

Ben Fortescue feels awful about his role in preventing Rebecca from attending her first season. To make it up to her, he visits regularly and soon becomes enchanted with the young woman. He fights against his feelings though because his previous marriage was a disaster ending in his wife’s death in childbirth.

I enjoyed the growth of the characters and themes in the story. Both Ben and Rebecca needed to change. At first, Rebecca was a little immature only worried about missing her season. As the story progresses though, she learns to look outside herself and grows into a more caring, thoughtful, mature person. I loved her musical talents and the way Ben appreciated them.

Hurt by his previous marriage, Ben is still caught up in the past and refuses the opportunities before him. Though he cares for Rebecca, he’s hesitant to give his heart again. He’s willing to let her go so she can fulfill her dreams. I loved watching his attitudes change towards not only Rebecca but others in his sphere.

I loved some of the themes explored in the story: forgiveness, hope, family, loyalty, and second chances. Seeing characters from previous books was also fun and I appreciated the lightheartedness they brought to the story. I loved the ending and romance that blossoms along the way. This book can be read as a stand alone, but is more enjoyable if you’ve read the previous books in the series. Definitely recommend! I received an advanced copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
