Ronald Tierney December 12, 1944 - September 5, 2017 Born in Indianapolis, Indiana birthplace of Tierney's legendary, fictional character Dietrich (Deets) Shanahan. After years as a writer, newspaper editor and communications director, Tierney began writing mysteries in the late 1980s. The Stone Veil introduces semi-retired, Indianapolis-based private investigator Deets Shanahan. The first in a series of 11 novels, The Stone Veil was a finalist in St. Martin's Press "Best First Private Eye Novel" competition. It was also nominated for the Private Eye Writers of America Shamus Award for "Best First Novel." After Moving to San Francisco, Tierney embarked on a second series involving the strong and passionate Carly Paladino, the lead investigator for a large, prestigious San Francisco security firm and the down on his luck, streetwise P.I. Noah Lang. Tierney was a member of the Authors Guild, Mystery Writers of America, and the Private Eye Writers of America. Tierney's novels have been published by the UK's Severn House, St. Martin's Press and Dutton (Penguin Group).

I want to preface this review by saying that the version I read was an advanced reader copy and some things may have changed in the finial version.

This book was good. I enjoyed it for the most part. It is short but I think the length is perfect. I love that this book gets straight to the point. It doesn't waste the readers' time by forcing them to read several chapters of seemingly unrelated backstory. I only care about a characters backstory if it's relevant to the plot and this book does this perfectly!

I enjoyed the near constant dialogue. I believe the best mysteries are those in which the detectives gain most of their incite from simply speaking to the other characters. This was done very well.

I give it only three stars though because it lacked something. I can't quite put my finger on what it lacked but there's something. I didn't feel any real emotion reading it. The ending, though not predictable, was still a bit lackluster.

Overall though, a good quick read for mystery lovers!

I love a mystery with humor and Ronald Tierney has certainly given us that. The story is almost mystical at times with the occasional appearance of a black tortoise at the wharf. Not something one would expect in a story featuring a forensic accountant and a suspected fraudulently run organization. Or is it?

Almost ready to wrap up his investigation of a nonprofit organization, things rapidly change with the death of David, the "IT guy." How did he end up in the ocean, and why didn't he try to climb out onto one of the piers? Was he killed? Murdered? This changes everything. Once again, Peter Strand has a possible case of fraud, if he can find it.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was interesting, lots of possible suspects, and humorous. Definitely quirky characters, an entertaining quick read.

Overall I enjoyed the plot line and I felt the writing was engaging. However, I wish their were more details and development. I think the story could benefit from being longer.

This (very) short mystery by Ronald Tierney is a quick but amusing read. There are a number of red herrings, and the perpetrator of the crime is not evident until close to the end. The personality of the main character is engaging, in a dry, matter-of-fact way - which makes the ending particularly surprising ...
