- Dr. Thornton was the first black woman in the United States to be Board-certified in high-risk obstetrics and to be accepted into The New York Obstetrical Society. She has been director of the Perinatal Diagnostic Testing Center at Morristown (NJ) Memorial Hospital, and senior perinatologist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. She has also risen to the rank of professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She's been on the medical advisory board of Rodale Press and Prevention magazine. Before her career in medicine, Dr. Thornton performed with her family orchestra, known as "The Thornton Sisters."
