- A member of the Church of Christ. Thompson graduated from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, in 1870. In 1873, he attended the New England Conservatory of Music and later continued his musical studies in Leipzig, Germany.
Song writer, composer, and publisher. He wrote, "Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling," "Jesus is All the World to Me," "Lead Me Gently Home, Father," and "There's a Great Day Coming." Also he also wrote "Have I Done Any Good?" and "Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel," two hymns found in the LDS (Mormon) hymn book.
