Good book. I love how Terrill kept comparing Modern China to Ancient China.

In the 1971, Ross Terrill was invited by the Mao regime to tour China and write about the country for the journal Atlantic Monthly. Well written, with a unique and sometimes enigmatic main character. Exposes the chaotic atmosphere of the Mao era.

Terrill is one of the best writers on China, and this is a pretty good biography of Mao; although after June 4th, Terrill came to a much less idealized view of Chinese history. See his book CHINA IN OUR TIME.
