An interesting, well written book about South Shore Bank's activist neighborhood building in Chicago and elsewhere and their successes (forget 2008-2010, after the book was written) and travails. A bank respected by many in nonprofit development; the lending and development by the bank and the holding company entity as a whole is risky and has had its' ups and downs.

The book and ideas therein may be of interest to nonprofit and bank folks involved in neighborhood redevelopment activities.

The author, Richard Taub, is a professor at the University of Chicago.

PS in 2010: FDIC declared the bank insolvent & sold assets to another bank. The story here nonetheless is interesting and informative. A revisit and revision by the author covering the bank's travails and the reasons for the travails would be interesting and illuminating.
