One of the social divisions that Quakers have the most difficulty bridging within the United States is the class divide between the middle and lower classes. This is exacerbated by the fact that so many Friends are highly educated and tend to regard those with less education or resultant income as somehow deficient or less virtuous, as having been unable to succeed in the struggle to get ahead. We doubt if we would enjoy having them as friends. The author is the daughter of a tenant farmer, a self-taught activist within the low-income community, a leader in the larger progressive movement, and by convincement, a Quaker.… (más)
