Leopold Stokowski (1882–1977)

Leopold Stokowski was a British-born was a virtuoso American conductor known for his flamboyant showmanship, his shock of silvery hair, the rich sounds he achieved from his orchestras, and for popularizing classical music. He conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1912 to 1936, during which time they made three films, including Disney's pioneering Fantasia (1940). He directed the New York Philharmonic from 1946 to 1950 and the Houston Symphony from 1955 to 1962. In 1962, he formed the American Symphony Orchestra in New York City. He wrote Music for All of Us, published in 1943. He also published his symphonic transcriptions of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
