Wow! OMG!!!

What a fantastic read! Beautifully Broken is the first novel in Sherry Soule's Spellbound series.

The author has created a mystery immersed in history and heritage. The story follows Shiloh (main character), a 16 year-old witch who has just started learning about her powers. Not only is she dealing with that, but she also has the unfortunate ability to see ghosts and demons. She is brave, selfless, and snarky. She's a character that I think a lot of teens, like myself can look up to. She lives in the town of Whispering Pines, where people just mysteriously vanish.

The characters are fantastic, creative, very realistic and well-constructed. The plot twists and turns, by the end of the book I was hanging on to my seat unable to read fast enough to find out more! Now, I can't wait for the next novel in the series!! A must read for sure! This is one of those Young Adult books that I would highly recommend to anyone that loves reading, even those that don't normally pick up a paranormal.

Serena is a sophomore transfer student who loves art. Her reason for switching schools has her at odds with her high profile father. In order to get in his good graces and get to study art she decides to pledge her mothers sorority. This follows the usual path of a new adult novel. The protagonist and her love interest both have some baggage. Serena potential sisters are generally good people and add to the story. Interested to see where the author plans to take this story.

Book Description: They say every town has its secrets, but that doesn’t even begin to describe Fallen Oaks. The townsfolk are a superstitious lot and the mystical disappearance of a local teen has everyone murmuring about a centuries old witch’s curse.
When sixteen-year-old Shiloh Trudell takes a summer job at Craven Manor, she discovers a ghost with an agenda. That’s where she meets the new town hottie, Trent Donovan, and immediately becomes enchanted by his charms.
Finally, Shiloh’s met someone who is supercute and totally into her, but Trent is immersed in the cunning deception that surrounds the mysterious Craven Manor. So much so that he may lose sight of what is truly important to him. And she can’t decide whether she wants to shake him or kiss him. Yet neither one of them can deny the immediate, passionate connection growing between them.
But underlying everything is the fear that Trent may be the next victim on a supernatural hit list, and Shiloh is the only person with the power to save him…
With cryptic messages from a pesky wraith, Shiloh will finally begin to understand the mysterious significance of the strange mark branded on her wrist and decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to protect the other teenagers in town.
Unfortunately, for Shiloh, not all ghosts want help crossing over. Some want vengeance.

Review: 3.5 stars

General: This book took a ton of getting into, about 100 pages worth but it is definitely worth sticking with. Once you hit over the halfway mark the book loses some of the childish and rambling feel and begins to turn into the start of a great paranormal YA series. However, I think it is problematic to need so many pages to capture attention. I stuck with it because I love finding good horrors, otherwise I may have stopped much sooner.

There were multiple confusing things in this novel that served as a distraction. The first were the many synonyms used. For a YA book they were far too large an words even I had to look up a few times. Which to me feels out of place in a YA/NA. Also, the writing switching from calling people by their first name, last name and title. Making it difficult to follow until you realize it’s all one person. I had trouble with this regarding Trent Donovan and Shiloh’s mother Darrah, who I’m still not certain if it is her birth mother or not based on wording choices throughout.

Another issue is detail and repetition in this book. While detail is a fantastic way to draw the reader in, there was too much in this book. Many times I found myself hung up on outfits and not focusing on the other points. I know teen girls get hung up on such things but it was to the extent that it felt overboard. Then the repetition in the book began to annoy me. Many many things are said or told to the reader so often I started to wonder if we were being told bc it was told in a lack luster way the first time. However if you can stick with the book it does provide a good read and a nice little thrill.

Characters: Shiloh- I thought Shiloh was a fantastically written character. She felt true to her age when dealing with everything thrown at her on a normal teen level. Also even the paranormal. She was afraid and determined and it rang very true. Her interactions with others minus her mother were also entertaining to watch. She had great spunk and was entertaining to follow through the story except at it’s start where she felt underdeveloped and a little uninteresting.

Trent: I enjoyed Trent. Perhaps as always, a little too much a good thing,-rich, smart, hot,caring- but perfect for a book. His smugness really set him apart from other book characters and made him compelling for me to read. Aside from that his past and part in the paranormal was interesting as well and I love the idea that he’s going to get to reveal himself more in other books.
