This book is about masochism as practised by a 'commercial' young woman who is well paid but who doesn't work specifically for the money. It gives a detailed description of the pitfalls of the practice, which include the problem of defining the acceptable and unacceptable in terms of pain and humiliation, and the ambiguities of the woman's relationship with her various clients. It is in the form of a diary which is precise in its detailing of the way her relationships change from day to day, and it impresses as realism.
