Daphne Sheldrick was born Daphne Jenkins on June 4, 1934 in Kenya, which was still a British colony. She became a wildlife conservationist and was an important voice in the movement to save the declining elephant population and raise awareness about poaching. She lived at the Tsavo East National mostrar más Park in Kenya with her husband. After his death, she founded the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. She wrote several books including The Orphans of Tsavo, An Elephant Called Eleanor, and Love, Life, and Elephants: An African Love Story. The work done by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was the focus of the British series Elephant Diaries and the documentary Born to Be Wild. Love, Life, and Elephants: An African Love Story por Daphne Sheldrick
I loved this book and read it leading up to a visit to Nairobi and the David Sheldrick orphanage. Daphne Sheldrick had an incredible life and the work she and her family accomplished is pretty incredible. I thought the recounting of how they lived their lives and the many wild animals that they raised fascinating. The storytelling is a bit jumpy at times but this just seems like an authentic portrayal of their lives. Seeing the work being done in the elephant orphanage really brought to light how important elephant conservation really is. They continue to fight an uphill battle for these wonderful animals and for that, I am truly grateful. The pictures included in the book were also lovely. A great read!… (más)
Great, true story. Loved the elephants we saw on safari and this book added to my understanding and awareness.
Author gushed entirely too much, flatters herself and takes credit which should be attributable to others. Her life was very interesting but she could have written less about how wonderful she is, how much she adored her perfect husband and come out with a super book. I found her entirely too irritating beyond belief. And while she emphasizes elephants, they played a much smaller part than represented on the cover and title.
One of the best, not least because of its passion.
