I have this thing about disasters, and I enjoy reading contemporaneous accounts alongside modern reporting of the same incidents.
Chicago was just one of many cities that suffered conflagrations in the 19th century. Combustible construction, limited water supplies, and lack of building codes made it easy for fires to consume entire business districts. Because of Chicago's large population and numerous newspapers, this fire was widely reported and is well known today. The Peshtigo fire, which started in Wisconsin on the same day, was much larger and killed more people, but is less remembered.
The Chicago Historical Society and Northwestern University maintain a very interesting website dedicated to the memory of the fire.… (más)
