I’d heard about this book from a tour guide at Forest Park in St. Louis. It is never really possible for someone to know everything about the city in which they live, but it is definitely worth a try. Looking about for information leads sometimes to beautiful and informative and excited books like this.

The author, Robert Sharoff, and photographer, William Zbaren, show a tremendous amount of respect in the joyousness of the Introduction and Acknowledgments and in the photographs that serve to illuminate the beauty and diversity of buildings and other structures in this city.

Eads Bridge gets pride of first listed and is shown in a couple of what may be my favorite photographs in the whole book. Sharoff and Zbaren do a fairly good job of sticking to their proscription to avoid churches and houses (not as a general rule in life, I think, rather as a way to challenge themselves to look beyond the expected). The selections are preceded by informative text that gives a sort of chronology of architects and architecture in St. Louis, so when their names and styles are mentioned again in the text that accompanies the specific locations, it is easy to follow for the architecturally-challenged like myself.

The only thing that I think is missing from this book is a map showing the geographic locations of the structures. However, addresses are given, and so compiling such a map on Google is no hardship.

I heartily recommend this book. It is not a dense read and is very rewarding.
