I am used to writing fantasy and sci-fi, so reading about a normal person's life was a little unusual at first. It's definitely a different atmosphere and perhaps a little slower than the action-packed novels I'm used to, but I still enjoyed reading about Josie and her relationships, especially her mentorship of a 12-year-old abandoned boy, Payton.

Michelle Schlicher has a way of making you care about and relate to the characters in her books. I always know when I pickup one her novels that I'm going to get a genuine story that will touch my life in one way or another. Even though we only get a brief glimpse into the various characters here, I still found myself absorbed in their lives. I think it's their realism that draws you in because these characters are people you encounter everyday in your life...or you might be one of them yourself. Regardless, this story emphasizes humanity and the human condition.

For me, this was an interesting story to read. I loved the setting of the school and how we get the POV from various people in the community. A thing is really only the sum of its parts and that is without a doubt the heart of a school. My only negative thought is that perhaps we are introduced to too many people along the way. It got a little hard to keep everyone straight near the end (though I am terrible with names...). But I understand the purpose of the many people we meet.

This is one of those stories where the bigger picture was a little lost on me until the very end. But once I put the pieces together, I was impressed by the purpose of this story. I love Michelle Schlicher's work for the emotions she can evoke from me when I finish one of her novels.

Again, I think every reader can relate to this in one way or another thanks to the characters, the setting and the message.

This book really surprised me; I knew I was going to enjoy it, but I didn't think it would touch me this much. Simply a beautiful story.

The format reminded me a lot of The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants: four completely different girls navigating the next phase of life. But here, you have women in all stages of life with such unique yet relatable stories to read about. I found myself in little pieces in each of them and that was what surprised me the most. I really didn't think I would relate to all of the characters (I'm not a grandmother or mother) but I was immediately drawn into all their stories.

I also loved how realistic this story was. These are situations many people will find themselves in; and these are relationships that most of us will have in our life times. It was just so well-rounded in that respect.

Needless to say, this was a great read about life, love, family and being comfortable with yourself. I think lots of readers will enjoy this for its simple yet compelling stories.

I had a lot of questions when I started this book: What was the burden? And what's this about magic? I couldn't wait to get the answers!

I don't want to give too much away because the reveal of Holiday's "burden" was a big "wow" moment for me. So I'll just say it was a story that I've never read about and it captured my full attention from the start.

The great thing about this story is that the chapters alternate between the "now" and "then" so you really get Holiday's full story. You see how she has dealt with her past and how it affects the present, enhancing her character development. I really loved watching it all come together. They always have the most satisfying ending when you see the bigger picture.

I really felt for Holiday as a character. She's just doing the best she can with what she has and you can't help but to empathize with her. Her growth from start to finish is just amazing and I loved watching her grow before my eyes.

Milo is great too! I thought he would play a bigger role/be the focus for the novel but he has just the right touch for bringing this story to life. He doesn't distract from Holiday's story but complements it in a way that enhances the entire novel.

This is a beautifully crafted story about how the past can alter our future but learning that it shouldn't govern your life. Holiday's specific circumstances won't apply to everyone but her discovery of moving on from the past will resonate with many readers.
