J. Herman Schauinger

1764 Cathedrals in the Wilderness, by J. Herman Schauinger (read 10 Feb 1983) This is a 1952 biography of Benedict Flaget, who was consecrated in 1810 as first bishop of Bardstown, Ky.,and served as such except for a few months in 1833 till the see was transferred to Louisville in 1843 and then continued as Bishop of Louisville till he died 11 Feb 1850. It is quite a good book, and tells all about the Church in Kentucky from 1792 till 1850. It made me wish I could visit Bardstown and see the old Cathedral there. Flaget was born in France and his efforts in building up the Church in Kentucky were monumental. This is a good study of a Bishop in a period that I have not read much about.… (más)
