1872 The Russian Revolutions of 1917: The Origins of Modern Communism, by Leonard Schapiro (read 25 Oct 1984) This is a good, factual book on a subject which is not an easy one. One could spend a lifetime studying the literature on the Russian Revolution, but it really isn't that interesting.

2335 Turgenev: His Life and Times, by Leonard Schapiro (read 28 Oct 1990) The subject was born at Orel, Russia, on 28 Oct 1818 and died in France on 3 Sept 1883 at 2 P.M. This is a 1978 book written by a British professor at the London School of Economics. I thought this biography was well enough done, though, since it took me a week to read it, you can tell I was not unfailingly absorbed by it. I may read more by Turgenev, but I am sure I do not get as much out of his work as I should and it is not really clear to me why he interests me as much as he does. Maybe it is just that he is more readable than Dostoyevsky. Turgenev never married, and lived with Pauline Viandot and her husband a lot. His life was not a happy one but it was interesting.… (más)
