NCLA Review -Have you ever met an enthusiastic, mature Christian and wondered how they got that way? John Savage calls such people “Intelligent Christians.” He identifies components they have in common. As he describes encounters with engaging Christians, he offers readers suggestions for promoting similar spiritual growth in their own lives. Savage includes practical helps—such as a list of “potentially destructive core beliefs” (not necessarily religious) that interfere with growth, alternative styles of praying, even questions that help identify a person’s motivation and degree of passion when considering whether to get involved in a volunteer job. Savage’s insightful ideas about Christian growth excited me, and I profited by them. My one criticism is that he seems to be following the advice given to speakers: “tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you just told them.” But Intelligent Christians can scan.
