This story was fun and lighthearted with some drama and seriousness thrown in the mix as well. It's especially great if you're a fan of Gilmore Girls with Lorelei and Rory but instead of being in the quaint town of Stars Hollow, it's like the town of Desperate Housewives.
The narrator, Emma Love, did a fantastic job with this story. She did all the characters' voices and I couldn't tell that she was the only narrator. I wondered if there was more than one narrator so it's always been amazing to me how well some narrators like Emma can do. She does great at the voices, bringing the characters to life and drawing you into the story and bringing the world, etc. to life also.
In this book, Ginny, a single mom, and her daughter, 11-year-old Harri, move to a posh neighborhood from the 'wrong side of town' with Jeff, who was divorced and married Ginny. They move into the house that Jeff lived in with his ex-wife and things become complicated as they try to fit in this new neighborhood with these new more upscale neighbors. Ginny and Harri have to navigate and figure things out with PTA Moms, mean girls, and real housewife contenders. When secrets, bad behavior and the like take a toll on Ginny and Harri and their new marriage/family, Ginny has to decide what's important and what to protect.
This does have a bit of content that could be triggering with attempted rape, death of a loved one/cancer, divorce, bullying, and possibly touching on the subject of unhealthy eating related to bullying. This is a rather fun and lighthearted read that leaves you feeling happy and uplifted after the end even though there are some hard things and emotional parts in it too.
Make sure to pick this one up and give it a listen. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for letting me listen and review this ALC (Advanced Listening Copy). All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ginny has recently married after a very quick engagement. She and her daughter, Harri, have moved from their only home they have known to a Jersey suburb. Ginny soon realizes she will never fit in with the women of the neighborhood. They are nothing like her old friends and she is not sure how well Harri is going to survive in the new school. Has Ginny made the biggest mistake by marrying Jeff?!?!

Ginny is a character which everyone can relate to. At one time or another, the reader has gone through something she experiences in this book. The insecurities only women know how to create and the horror of embarrassing your kid are just a few that are well represented in this tale. I laughed and I cried for Ginny on more than one occasion.

This book is absolutely adorable. And it takes you on a ride of emotions. There were quite a few times I wanted to slap one or two of the characters. But, Ginny comes out all in one piece. And with her integrity intact. And so does Harri! The author did a fabulous job with this tween!

The narrator, Emma Love, is amazing! She has perfect inflection, especially during the “trying” times. And this book is full of them!

Need a wonderful read about life, friends and enemies…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

Welcome to the Neighborhood by Lisa Roe is a 2022 Soucebooks Casablanca publication.

Ginny and Jeff marry after a brief whirlwind romance and move into Jeff’s upscale suburban home in New Jersey. This is a big change for Ginny and her eleven-year-old daughter, Harri. Before meeting Jeff, Ginny, a professional artist, lived in Queens, barely getting by. Now she is thrilled that Harri will have different and better opportunities and is eager to get to know the other moms in the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, they are not as welcoming to Ginny or Harri as she'd hoped. Things go from bad to worse when Jeff finally gets a long-awaited career opportunity which will require him to leave his new wife and stepdaughter for over a month, leaving Ginny and Harri swimming in shark infested waters…

This story has a lot of wisdom and depth, if you are paying close attention, and as I read this book close to Mother’s Day, I saw a lot about the mother and daughter dynamic, in this story. I thought it was very thought provoking and maybe a little eye opening too.

Though the characters were a bit exaggerated to make a point, the author did a great job. In my neck of the woods, I’m not privy to anything like this, but if living in a posh suburban home is anything like it was portrayed in this book, I’ll take a pass. None of these people seem particularly happy and their children seem destined to follow suite.

My heart went out to Harri as she struggled to keep up with the advanced girls her age who were already worried about dieting, carbs, and applying makeup expertly. There is something to be said for marching to the beat of one’s own drum and letting kids be kids for a little while, at least. I’d much rather see a world filled with kids like Harri, and I think maybe that's something people need to take a closer look at, since mental health issues are at an epidemic crisis point- just saying.

As for Jeff, he’s mostly off camera, a little clueless, a little self-absorbed, too, but he redeems himself nicely in the end.

Overall, this is a wonderful gem of a story- a great Mother’s Day story, too, though I’m not sure it was billed as such, with a lovely, heartwarming conclusion.

Welcome to the Neighborhood by Lisa Roe
Contemporary chick lit.
Ginny falls in love with Jeff and she and her daughter move into his home to build a new family. Trouble brews with the upper crust as Ginny is left to deal with the neighborhood gossips whole her husband works out of the country.
It’s not the start she expected.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook version narrated by Emma Love. I enjoyed the performance. The full narrative is from Ginny’s perspective so there was no need for a lot of voices to perform. Regardless, I clearly felt Ginny’s anxiously watching her daughter become someone else and I heard the anger and embarrassment from the neighbor hitting on her.

This was more a renewal of learning or relearning values and standing up for them. It was heartbreaking to listen to the daughter be bullied by the neighbor friends but so wonderful when Ginny said enough!
Enriching and smart. An empowering story for values.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and Dreamscape Media.
