If you can overcome the repeated self-promotion and branding attempts of the ‘5-seconds-rule’, there is some information worth listening (I listened to the audio version). To me, the chatter about the ‘5-seconds-rule’, how she invented it, how it saved many from hurting themselves was the least interesting (and the most off-putting) part of this book. If you can overcome that, then there is some useful information here.

Mel Robbins is a smart woman and some of the things she shares are things needed to be heard by most. I think this explains why her talks attract crowds. Many of us need it to be expressed out loudly that it is time to get out of our own heads, that we need our own consistent push to reach our goals, and that we need to let go of hurtful and useless thoughts, and of such people. And responding to an immediate impulse to push ourselves could make the difference. As someone with a scientific background, I wasn’t really satisfied with her brief mentions and references to the science that would support her ideas. I personally would have liked to hear much more about it.

Overall, I would not rate this highly as a book discussing her ideas. It is not. But there is some valuable information that I enjoyed hearing and I know I will keep thinking about.

Doing the work to improve your life is simple, you can do it, and it’s work you want to do—because it’s the most important work that there is. It is the work of learning how to love and trust yourself enough to stop waiting and to start leaning into all the magic, opportunity, and joy that your life, work, and relationships have to offer.

This book could have been an email.

In all seriousness, I was a little underwhelmed with this book. I felt like Mel was trying to sell the method of the 5-Second Rule not only to me, the reader, but even herself. The plastered pages of social media posts in the book, from people using the method, probably didn't help. It was way too "salesy" for me.

All that said, taken at face value, the method is one good tool to have in the box when trying to manage your thoughts. There are many other tools that produce similar outcomes, but this is one. I'm just not sure I would have written an entire book about it, although I guess the added revenue stream is probably nice. I'll definitely use the method where it fits, but it's not going to be the one thing that transforms my life as much as this book promises to do so.… (más)

Liked it. Simple principle, easy to understand, hard to implement if you don't follow the rule! So 5-4-3-2-1 GO
