...For his criticism of Malone, Steevens leaned heavily on the notes of a "disgruntled scholar" named Joseph Ritson, who supplied many notes because he could not find a publisher for his own projected edition of Shakespeare. Steevens' was only too happy to see the notes demeaning Malone's scholarship added to his edition of 1793....
