Field Guide to the American Teenager: Appreciating the Teenager You Live With by Michael Riera. Epiphany library section 8 I: Life Skills, Learning K-12. Each chapter in this book presents a typical problem encountered by teens, such as drinking and driving, motivation, integrity, date rape, learning disabilities, coming out, weapons on campus, breaking up, and eating disorders. The teens react to each problem in typical ways, usually in order to save face, or avoid shame or belittlement. Then the authors present a dialogue between the teen and a trusted adult about what happened. The authors then tell parents how best to handle the situation if their own child runs into the same problem.
What sets this book apart from others is that these authors know how teens think. Their advice is not only right on the money, but even experienced teachers and counselors will find food for thought and course corrections. So imagine how regular parents will benefit from this advice. The authors discuss typical errors that parents make, why they are damaging or ill-suited, and what to do instead. What’s more, each scenario is only about ten pages long, so you can consult a chapter as needed or read the entire book. I suggest reading this book when your kids enter ninth grade, and again halfway through HS. It could mean the difference between life and death in terms of drinking and driving, in a parent’s reaction to their child’s coming out, or to an eating disorder. This book also advises when to seek professional help. Wise parents seek help when needed.
Appendices include “Being 14-15 means...,” “Being 15-16 means...,” Being 16-17 means...,” and “Being 17-18 means....” A bibliography suggests additional helpful reading.
I highly recommend this book for all parents. While the good news is that most kids get through high school relatively unscathed, this book can help to limit the mistakes and the pain you and your teens will encounter. Nobody is a perfect parent, but we can all become better ones.
