A short and image-heavy account of the Apollo moon missions. The "astronauts' own words" of the title are mostly extracts of transcripts from the missions, sometimes featuring astronauts doing their jobs, sometimes joking around, sometimes both. These are occasionally interspersed with comments they made about the experience later, giving a bit of context. There's also a few words (and paintings) from Apollo 12's Alan Bean at the end to wrap things up.

I'd say the transcript snippets and the variety of pictures included make this worth adding to my shelf of books about Apollo, but, the writing isn't especially great, overall, and aside from the moments the transcripts cover its treatment of the missions is pretty cursory, so it wouldn't be the first book of this kind I'd recommend to people.… (más)

Very short and mostly cheerleading but serves as a shot of optimism anyone could use.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, first-person accounts from the astronauts themselves tell the compelling story of NASA’s Apollo program. The inclusion of both mission dialogue and reminiscences provide readers with a unique insight into each mission. Lavishly illustrated, the book includes an Appendix of mission data for NASA’s manned spaceflight programs, a space glossary, and a list of websites for further research.

This informative book is sure to please readers interested in space exploration and/or NASA’s manned spaceflight program.

Highly recommended.

Previously unpublished photographs and other rarely seen images and documents highlight this account of the groundbreaking Apollo 11 mission to the moon. In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of this momentous accomplishment, “First on the Moon” takes a behind-the-scenes look at Apollo from the days of the space race to the Eagle’s landing in the Sea of Tranquility and then to the splashdown in the Pacific, returning the astronauts to Earth, and what comes next.

Highly recommended.
