principal.

CYCLE OF THE YEAR AS PATH OF INITIATION LEADING TO AN EXPERIENCE OF THE CHRIST-BEING:
AN ESOTERIC STUDY OF THE FESTIVALS

FOREWORD

Knowledge of the spiritual foundations of the world, which could be
acquired through inwardly accompanying the cycle of the year, was the
natural property of all human beings in ancient times. Subsequently this
knowledge had to be lost in the name of individual freedom. In our tin
this knowledge must be found anew through the free, light-filled cor
sciousness of the fully developed human personality.

Conscious union with the spiritual essence of the cycle of the
enables us to approach Christ, the central Being of our cosmos. Since the
Mystery of Golgotha, He has become the Representative of the spiritual
orld-foundations in their fullness, and in our time reveals Himself in the
etheric realm that surrounds the Earth.

In this connection the following question was once put to Rudolf
Steiner: how may a soul prepare itself most effectively for an experience of
the Etheric Christ? He answered: Through meditatively living with the
cycle of the year, through a meditative participation in its rhythms. For th
mysteries of the year are nature's gift to the meditator who is seeking access
to the sphere of the Christ.

In the following words, Rudolf Steiner refers to a union with the Christ
or the Son in the rhythm of the yearly cycle: in the course of a year
man participates in a rhythm which is in accordance with the rhythm of th
ear and in which he experiences a union with the world of the Son.' And
somewhat later in the same lecture: 'And so we shall find that, closel
connected with what lives in the rhythm of the year, in the same way that
breathing indwells the human individual, there lives a spiritual essence
which is part of the human soul, which is the human soul itsef: we find that
to the yearly cycle and all its secrets there belongs the Christ Being who has
passed through the Mystery of Golgotha.2.

From these words it is clear to what extent the theme of the cycle of the
year is of truly fundamental significance for the spiritual-scientific research
of Rudolf Steiner, who turned again and again to it-and to the examination
of the inner nature of the principal festivals-in the course of his
throposophical activity. It is also possible to say that this theme is the
most important single element in anthroposophical Christology, which in
its turn permeates, and unites into a whole, all the other areas of
anthroposophical research: cosmology, the picture of the world and of man,
spiritual-scientific historical research and the modern path of initiation...
