Sunayna Prasad

A magic-laden plot with a nice touch of mystery and suspense!

The Frights of Fiji is the debut novel by young author Sunayna Prasad and the first in the planned seven-volume, middle-grade fantasy series, Alyssa McCarthy's Magical Missions. With its realistically relatable young heroine, her friends, and family members leading the action, this first book was a fun and imaginative adventure where good triumphs over great odds and the evil behind it.

A major strength of the story lies in the realistic portrayal of the pre-teen characters, with their friendships, rivalries, and squabbles. Alyssa and Hailey relate to each other like siblings, and 'mean girl' Destiny Cox brings conflict into the group of friends. Much of the dialogue feels authentic and true to life. I liked that the author had adults who made regretful decisions but later apologized for their hasty actions.

The plot slowly divulges the main characters' backstories while maintaining the action's pace. The current menace is confronted and dealt with, and the book concludes on a positive note, leaving plenty of room for future adventures.

I recommend THE FRIGHTS OF FIJI to middle-grade readers who enjoy a magic-laden plot with a nice touch of mystery and suspense.… (más)

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Alyssa is a normal 14 year old girl now in middle school, that is until she was given extraordinary powers that she must learn to control. Though I don’t read many fantasy books I was able to read the first two books by Sunayna Prasad so I wanted to finish out the series, The New Enchantress. I am glad I did. This is another incredible book by this author. The main character goes through a lot of the same issues as most middle school age kids and I believe this would be an amazing book for this age to read. All of the characters were well developed and the plot sure kept my interest with its many twists and turns throughout the story.

Sunayna Prasad is a very good writer and she does a great job of writing books that will capture the hearts of young teens, and she adds some very valuable lessons along the trail. If you haven’t enjoyed any of her books, I encourage you to check out THE New ENCHANTRESS. I do think you would get a better understanding of the book if you read the first two in the series, but this one can be read as a stand along if you wish.

Poor Alyssa thought her troubles were over after Fiji but someone else gave her the magic back. Getting the magic back and not being able to control it wreaks havoc for Alyssa, her godfather and all her friends. This makes for a fun story that has a bit of a moral. Alyssa must learn control of her feelings and learn to have confidence in herself. I enjoyed this story and this one seemed to flow much better than the first book in the series. If you like magic than you should enjoy this series. I received a copy of this book from ireadbooktours for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.… (más)
