Jewels lives in a small Oregon town where the richest man happens to be a Japanese-born American, adopted as a child. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the town turns against him, and Jewels tries to protect him not only from the townspeople, but from the U.S. government when the internment orders arrive.

This is a young adult story about a 13 year old girl who grew up picking pockets on the streets of New York City who gets sold, or rather indentured, with Lizzie to a ranch in Pendleton, Oregon.

I would recommend this book for those looking for a strong female protagonist in a young adult story. Some drug use described in the morphine addictions of the soldiers returning from war.
