I am sure there are many little known facts about kitchens and kitchen culture in this book, but unfortunately they are hidden behind some of the most stilted and boring writing about food history currently published. A work of nonfiction does not have to have great literary merit, but an author should at least know that they are telling a STORY. Adding a few felicitous bon mots and a few judicious adjectives might have helped this book a great deal. As it is, it is a fine reference work for specific eras, especially colonial and post-colonial times, but after that, it is a somewhat jumpy recitation of facts. I hope someone else writes another book on this subject.… (más)
