An inspirational suspense story featuring young Charlie Troop-who witnessed his father’s murder; Charlie’s Aunt Liz-who is the only person Charlie will speak to; and Pastor Ian McNeal-who is a former U.S. marshal and is assigned to protect Charlie. This was a good enough read although I wasn’t always as invested in the story or the characters as I had hoped to be. I did enjoy the setting on an island in Florida with an impending hurricane and its subsequent arrival on land.

There's much more Christian thoughts in this book than I usually see in this series, especially on forgiveness. (One of my friends often comments on these books that what the characters believe isn't usually stated so that they could believe in anything--but I don't think that's true in this one.)

I did like that Rae's father tried to give her plausible deniability by not telling her about his actions, but I didn't like that he kept her in the dark when it probably was going to endanger her. I also understood Hunter not wanting to tell her the truth, especially at first when she wasn't thrilled to see him. I respect that he did not want to spoil her view of her late father. But at some point, I felt like he really needed to tell her what had happened so that she was aware and maybe so they could connect the dots.… (más)

I received this book in a box of books from a friend (who got them from another friend). That same friend recently wondered if there is a subgenre of romance related to sheriffs. I told her if there wasn't, there probably should be.

The main theme running through the book seems to be forgiveness--God's forgiveness, forgiving others, forgiving ourselves. Both the main characters struggle with forgiving themselves for things that happened in the past that had serious repercussions. Zane's convincing Rachel of it seemed a bit preachy though.

Other than that, the standard themes apply--Alex and Zane are identical twins so Zane allows himself to be convinced to pretend to be Alex to better solve his disappearance. Convenient. I did find it odd that the mayor would be in on and agree to such deception--but this is set in history and maybe such things were done that way back then. Again, it just seemed too convenient for me, though at least Zane did have some accountability in that an authority was aware that he was undercover. (To be fair to Zane, impersonating his brother was not his idea, even though he went along with it.)

I thought the deputy would prove to be involved somehow and was wrong. I did guess what Daniel was trying to say, but not much before the author revealed it.

This just happens to the first intimate book that I have read in what seems a long time. And I forgot how good they were. There seems to be mystery to these ones than the intrigue ones, but not does no make them bad. It’s good to read from a range of different genres; mix it up a bit.

Loved the characters; Nick is such a cutie and the type of man that every woman tries to find. He denies every thing that he can’t prove or at least tries to put it off for as long as possible. Helen wasn’t the usual leading female character that I would pick. It truly is hard to find a white knight in today’s world, but they are out there if you look hard enough.… (más)
