Eugene H. Peterson was born in East Stanwood, Washington on November 6, 1932. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Seattle Pacific University, a bachelor of sacred theology from New York Theological Seminary, and a master's degree in semitic languages from Johns Hopkins University. He mostrar más founded Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland in 1962, where he served as pastor until retiring in 1991. He then became a professor of spiritual theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia until retiring in 2006. His first book, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, was published in 1980. He wrote over 30 books including Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places, Eat This Book, Tell It Slant, As Kingfishers Catch Fire, and Every Step an Arrival. The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language won a Gold Medallion Book Award. He died from complications of heart failure and dementia on October 22, 2018 at the age of 85. - Eugene H. Peterson is professor emeritus of spiritual theology at Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia and was the founding pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland, where he ministered for 29 years. Eugene has authored more than 20 books including Run with the Horses (IVP), A Long Obedience in the Same Direction (IVP) and his five-volume series on spiritual theology, beginning with Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places (Eerdmans). Peterson is fluent in Hebrew and Greek and is the translator of the best-selling Bible, The Message.
Eugene made a rare public appearance Denver’s most famous literary landmark, The Tattered Cover Bookstore, in 2006 for 200 Alive authors and industry professionals. Here is the transcript of his presentation, “What Are Writers Good For?”

Leap Over a Wall is Eugene H. Peterson’s vibrant, insightful, and heartfelt exploration of one of the Bible’s most controversial figures: King David. Peterson beautifully elucidates the Old Testament’s rich depictions of David's failures and victories, recapturing their excitement and immediacy to reveal David himself as a crucially human example of how we relate to God.
A lot of latent wisdom here in a Pastor's struggle to remain real and authentic in his approach to God in an American culture that valued the individual and the superfluous above all. Very touching and overall helpful in visualizing the vocation of pastor.
The Message brings the life-changing power of the New Testament, the vibrant passion of the Psalms, and the rich, practical wisdom of Proverbs into easy-to-read modern language that echoes the rhythm and idioms of the original Greek and Hebrew. Written in the same kind of language you'd use to talk to friends, write a letter, or discuss politics, The Message preserves the authentic, earthy flavor and the expressive character of the Bible's best-loved books. - from the publisher
This book is based on the Songs of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). Each chapter focuses on one of these psalms and an aspect of the Christian life to which it speaks. (Except for the first chapter, based on Jeremiah 12:5.) The topics are: Discipleship, Repentance, Providence, Worship, Service, Help, Security, Joy, Work, Happiness, Perseverance, Hope, Humility, Obedience, Community, Blessing.
Overall, I quite liked this book. I loved Peterson's emphasis that the Christian life is not based on our emotions and feelings about God or ourselves.
In the chapter on worship, he states, "We think that if we don't feel something there can be no authenticity in doing it. But the wisdom of God says something different: that we can act ourselves into a new way of feeling much quicker than we can feel ourselves into a new way of acting. Worship is an act that develops feelings for God, not a feeling for God that is expressed in an act of worship." (p. 54)
I also liked this bit in the chapter about repentance: "A person has to be thoroughly disgusted with the way things are to find the motivation to set out on the Christian way. As long as we think the next election might eliminate crime and establish justice or another scientific breakthrough might save the environment or another pay raise might push us over the edge of anxiety into a life of tranquility, we are not likely to risk the arduous uncertainties of the life of faith. A person has to get fed up with the ways of the world before he, before she, acquires an appetite for the world of grace." (p. 25)
Peterson's thoughts often seemed abstract and big-picture, rather than practical steps to be taken, so while it was a good and helpful read, it requires more thought for those of us who aren't very intuitive.
One thing I wasn't crazy about was the use of The Message paraphrase instead of an actual Scripture translation.
Sometimes I felt there was a lack of continuity tying the chapters together, and I'm not sure if that's because each chapter is based on a different psalm and aspect of the Christian life, or because I read through this slowly. I think that I'll benefit from reading through it again, more quickly.… (más)
