Review of eBook

When Jesse Bolger’s girlfriend, Loren, packs up and leaves their Denver, Colorado home because Jesse's work takes him away far too much, Jesse idly wondered if perhaps he ought to change jobs. His boss at Ruger-Phillips West, Miles Sennett, commiserated with his loss, and offered Jesse some vacation time, but Jesse insists he’d rather be busy with his procurement work.

But a chance encounter with Robert Gleason, an eccentric acquaintance from high school [some ten years earlier] throws Jesse into the midst of a caper involving two Russian agents intent on destroying the United States. It isn’t long before the FBI is involved, convinced that Jesse is a double agent.

When Robert Gleason vanishes, Jesse knows that he does not have the skill to track him down. So, despite the unexpected actions of the FBI, he hires private investigator Rebecca Marte.

Does Gleason’s disappearance have anything to do with the Russian agents? And will Rebecca be successful in finding him?

=========

Seventh in the author’s Mind Sleuth series, this stand-alone book is a complete story. With well-developed characters and a twisty plot, the narrative is both complex and intriguing.

Told mostly from Jesse’s point of view, this tale is filled with secrets, spies, and terrorists, leaving readers to speculate as to whether there is truly a threat against the United States or if Robert Gleason is, for some unknown reason, spoofing Jesse. Readers must ferret out the truth as the unfolding tale spins a web of schemes and deception.

The inventive plot keeps readers guessing as the surprising revelations change things in unexpected ways as the story heads toward a satisfying denouement readers simply won’t see coming.

Highly recommended.

This was a really interesting premise but I felt a little lost reading it with not having read the prior books in the series. Despite that disconnect it was still an interesting read and I do intend to read the first books in the series now.

Rebecca takes on Nicole as a client and is sent down a rabbit hole of dark secrets and the struggles Nicole experienced two years earlier. The story is dialogue-driven and provides readers with various character perspectives to give an overall view of the case. Though, to maintain the suspense, readers are deprived of important details with moments in Nicole's past to explain her character. The back and forth isn't necessarily clear and the story is a slow-burn. Nonetheless, to maintain the suspense, readers are deprived of important details to push the narrative forward.

At Jen’s Place, a temporary shelter for survivors of domestic abuse in Lone Tree, Colorado, an angry husband comes in search of his wife. Kyle Logan meets his match, however, in Nicole Veles, the woman who runs the home and keeps Logan from dragging his wife, Linda, out of the house.

Seventeen months later, Nicole is in Saint Louis, seeing the aid of FBI agent-turned Private Investigator Rebecca Marte. Nicole tells the investigator that she killed a man, but she wants Rebecca to look into the supposed suicide of Randolph Peterson.

Did someone inside the HomeRight home warranty company orchestrate events in order to cause Peterson to kill himself? Or, perhaps, the man’s death was not suicide at all.

=========

Sixth in the author’s Mind Sleuth series, Rebecca Marte returns to investigate the circumstances behind an apparent suicide. Nicole Veles, emotionally damaged from the treatment she endured during her kidnapping some two years earlier, is slowly finding her way back to herself once again. And, although readers are likely to wish for a bit more explanation/information regarding Nicole’s kidnapping, torture, and escape, the book does work as a standalone for readers who have not read the earlier volumes in the series.

Kyle Logan’s antics pull readers into the telling of the tale from the outset. As the narrative unfolds, readers are kept guessing as new revelations change everything they think they know; the suspenseful, tension-filled tale keeps readers turning those pages as swiftly as possible.

Nuanced, well-developed characters and a strong sense of place anchor the narrative; realistic interactions between the characters keep the story credible as the plot twists and turns, heading toward a denouement readers are sure to appreciate.

Highly recommended.
