Charles S. Peirce (1839–1914)

American philosopher.  Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  The son of Harvard mathematician, Benjamin Peirce.  Graduated from Harvard in 1859.  He worked in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survery from 1860 to 1891.  He taught logic at Johns Hopkins University, 1879 to 1894; and for three years was special lecturer in Philosophy of Science at Harvard.  He also lectured at the Lowell Institute in Boston.  Retired to Milford, Pennsylvania in 1887.  Principal writings: The Collected Papers of C.
