Dean Smith, Earl of Carwick, is all set to get married when he is tricked into being found in the company of Rob, a known male prostitute. His engagement cancelled, Dean sets out on a journey to Bath to try to set the record straight, Rob at his side to help determine who set him up. But spending time with Rob stirs up some curiosities in Dean causing him to struggle with how he really feels and who he really is.

I absolutely loved this. I enjoyed the previous M.J. Pearson story I'd read, The Price of Temptation, so I came in expecting a good historical m/m romance - and that's certainly what I got. Pearson has a talent for writing the angst people go through when they're struggling with whether to act on their desires and it shines in this book, too. This is one that I was not at all expecting to like as much as I did. I think part of that is the historical fiction aspect (I'm finding that historical m/m romance - when well-written - has a way of pulling me in), but the story itself and the characters are definitely worth a read.

The slow build-up of the main relationship is one of those things that left me frustrated but also on the edge of my seat. The complexity of the characters and their personalities (including the supporting and side characters) really helps bring this world and story to life. The only reason this one didn't pull 4 stars from me is because I felt like maybe it was just a bit long for the story being told - some parts were drawn out that could have been dealt with more swiftly. But it's still a good story, regardless.

Opened the book today to discover that it has an ugly new cover instead of the old drop-dead-naughty one :| Thank god for Calibre. All wrongs are set to right now.

And thank god for the new ugly cover, because on my travels to find a good size old cover, I stumbled upon this masterpiece of a trailer (turned out later it was in one of the reviews, too - ha-ha)
