Biografía breve
Freeman Wilford Patterson, photographer (b at Long Reach, NB 25 Sept 1937). Freeman Patterson is one of Canada's most popular landscape photographers. He is particularly acclaimed for his sensuous colour and technical skill in images that evoke the spiritual qualities of nature. Patterson developed an interest in photography while studying for a Master's of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary, New York, during the early 1960s. In 1965 he gave up a position teaching religious studies in Alberta in order to devote himself to photography full time. Patterson's photographs are best known through pictorial publications. A teacher and frequent writer on photography, Patterson is the author of several instructive guides on photographic technique and aesthetics.

this was really about taking pictures rather than about the pictures.

Freeman Patterson's book is a classic, and with very good reason. It was helpful for me in many areas: composition of visual art; contemplative photography; focusing and discovering my vision; intentionally making images rather than just discovering them. I recommend it highly for photographers of all kinds, and for visual artists of all kinds.

This Third Edition familiarizes readers with the traditional principles of composition and visual design. The jargon-free text provides practical techniques and innovative exercises for breaking with traditional concepts of design to enable the photographer to develop a keen awareness of subject matter and a personal direction.

My copy of this book well pre-dates the digital camera revolution; I assume newer editions include discussion of that, but I didn't really *miss* it.

This is a good, cogently written introduction to the basic principles of photography, as art and science, as directly applied to nature. It has me really desperately wanting a proper photographer's camera rather than my little auto so that I can apply some of what I've learned about exposure and depth of field and lenses - but there's plenty in here that I *can* do even with my camera, and I've loved doing it.

Composition, light, color, suggestions of when and where and what to photograph and practice on (even, if you can find no other nature, a piece of moldy bread in your kitchen--) fill me up with inspiration. And the loads and loads of full-color examples are beautiful without being so intimidating they frighten me off.
