Bruce Paton is a retired cardiac surgeon & wilderness medicine expert. He has accompanied expeditions as a trip doctor to Alaska, South America, Africa & Nepal. This one took some time to get through. It's not something I could immerse myself in, as it read more like a history text than a narrative. It was also about the exploits of men that I consider to have been unsympathetic characters on quests that, well, they shouldn't have gone on. They're tough, strong men, for sure, but they are not my heroes. The only one I recommend young people be taught to admire was John Rae.

The author does acknowledge the poor judgement, greed, racism, and sexism in an almost regretful tone. But he admires the leadership qualities and the endurance and courage" of these men so much, that even when he tries to be objective, he comes across as adulatory. He can never quite bring himself to condemn any man or action.

Still, I read something outside my comfort zone, and learned some stuff, so it wasn't a total waste of time."
