- Born in Southport, Lancashire, in 1880 her real name was Elsie Jeanette Dunkerley. Elsie's first book was called Goblin Island. She wrote 87 books and a number of short stories for girls. Elsie passed away in a Worthing nursing home, in January 1960.

Still one of my favourite school series.
Nothing special, but still perfectly readable. Very much about ethics, which is one of the strengths of the Abbey books.
Not one of the best Abbey books, but still perfectly readable. I do find that having Joy, Jen, Joan and Jandy all in one book causes me to mix characters up. Just too many Js.
The outcome of many things in this book is too easy to predict, but then again, perhaps it should be.
The basic philosophy of the book is that one should be kind to people. But it also looks at it from a sensible angle. The Abbey girls help, but they first make sure that the help is welcome.

A book with some interesting approaches to death. How do we handle death, what is an apropriate reaction?
I'm not religious myself, but I found myself relating to one character who had the courage to say to her friend who's mother had died. (I paraphrase) "Why are you crying for her? She is with God. She is with the man she loved. If she had lived until you were able to say goodbye, she would have spent more time in pain. Is that something you would have wanted?"
That's a brave subject to tackle for a school novel.
Like most Abbey school novels, the men remain almost totally invisible. Even when character are married, the author manages to keep them out of the way.
It's a sign of the times when the book was written that pregnancy is pretty much a taboo subject. Babies appear almost by magic. The only hint that a character is pregnant (which I failed to catch) was that she was tired a lot of the time.… (más)
