In a the 19th century the improved printing techniques, and increased literacy of the population, encouraged an explosion of magazine publishing, and that in turn resulted in the short story which was ideally suited to such publications. Many authors took up this form of writing, which proved highly profitable and popular and this anthology contains the work of
