Author's dedication: This book is dedicated to the tragic souls of Igbo Landing situated at Dumbar Creek in St Simon's Island, USA, who made the ultimate sacrifice in May, 1803, opting for mass suicide by drowning rather than be taken into slavery.

Kinsmen, your bones shall rise
again...one day.

Includes:
-- The Unclean - DNF, I think I made it to about 20%. - It was too dark in a realistic way for me at this time in my life. The woman's suffering, including the forced drinking of the cadaver bathing water, the beatings... I just can't right now.

The tale is told in two time lines. One is a more current timeline in which a woman is participating in a ritual which has her sitting in penance under an ancient tree near her freshly dead husband. The other timeline is her young, and optimistic about her future. Studying, getting herself educated, to hopefully catch the attention of a lawyer or a teacher as a potential bride. Things didn't work out that way. She is not in control of her destiny. The men & boys are.

I loved this. What a great book. It made me cry ,it made me smile, it gave me a glimpse of another place and a different culture. This kind of superstition in the 20th century is just shocking. I found the book to be very well written, nice narrative, interesting story, and i loved the little twist at the end.I couldn't put it down from beginning to end.I would definitely recommend this.
