The book provides a good overview of the "range wars" between cattlemen and sheepherders that occurred in western states of the USA during the 1870s to 1920s.

States chronicled include Texas, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. The author provides a handy "Chronology of Hostilities" and a summary of "War Statistics," (15, 16) which I frequently found myself referencing.

The hostilities in Wyoming were the most extensive and their coverage takes up nearly half the book. It's sad to think that the "wars" included 128 violent incidents, which resulted in over 53,000 sheep deaths and nearly 50 human deaths.

Of the book's ten chapters, one (chapter 7) is devoted to the exploits and execution of Tom Horn, and one (chapter 9) the tragedies in Ten Sleep, both in the state of Wyoming.

The author provides a summary of books and movies that resulted because of the "wars." (158f)

The book is indexed and it includes a nice bibliography.

I obtained my copy on the used book market, however, readers should be able to find copies at their local library.

I've had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Bill O'Neal, the current State Historian of Texas, speak at a couple of presentations regarding cowboys and outlaws of Texas. This publication about the most famous gunslingers of Texas is a great example of what history and reading pleasure can had by reading one of Mr. O'Neal's books. If you see his name on the spine, take a read. Well worth the time. You might write email: sales @arcadiapublishing.com if you're interesting and can't find a copy.
