Biografía breve
Carola Mary Anima Oman was the middle child of three. Her father was the military historian Charles William Oman and her mother came from a military family. She began writing plays as a child and published a volume of poetry in 1919. In 1922, she married the future Sir Gerald Lenanton. Under both her maiden and married names, she wrote more than 30 works of fiction, history and biography for adults and children. In 1976, she published An Oxford Childhood, a family memoir with period photographs. Carola Oman was appointed a trustee of the National Maritime Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. There is a memorial to her and her husband in the village church of Ayot St Lawrence.

Extraordinary period piece, about the time just before and just after the beginning of the Second World War. Our protagonist is a single upper class woman and the novel follows her as she provides support to just about everyone around her. Very understated, conveys an incredibly strong sense of the time, and unlike anything else I have ever read.

By far the best retelling of the Robin Hood stories I have ever read.

Robin Hood is not remade into a contemporary hero; the book is set in the mediaeval England of Edward II and Robin Hood is of that time. The stories are faithful retellings of old legends of Robin Hood, however, Robin Hood, the other merry men, and the villains are all well delineated characters and never caricatures.

The book has many subtly humorous passages and makes use of a number of sophisticated literary devices. The illustrations by van Abbe are arresting; the line drawing are outstanding.

The book evokes a distant place and time wonderfully and is by turns funny, tragic, grim, and triumphant.
