Hip Hop crept up on me. It was a flash in the pan style that could safely be ignored, as it was going to fade away within a couple of years. Then we had 'Gangsta Rap', a movement so repulsive that it was difficult to say anything positive: surely, this would kill Hip Hop but, no: it has moved on, and gone from strength to strength.

Finding that, even an old fogie, such as myself, was discovering areas of the genre to admire, it was time to learn the history. I missed the TV version, it's a Channel Four production, but I shall catch up on t'interweb, however, a written word is always good, as a reference source.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in modern music.

More of a primer than a history, The Hip Hop Years is good for putting things in context for the hip hop novice, but it probably wouldn't hold much interest for aficionados. The non-linear chronology of the book and the sometimes judgmental tone of the writing were irritating, but it was, all in all, a compelling read.
