What a nostalgia trip! Having grown up practically inside my local library this book brought back all my fond memories of the orange shag-carpeted storytime steps, weekly Thursday trips to the library, and the two Wendys who ran the children’s department - and reminded me why I grew up with the goal of becoming a librarian in the first place. I may have changed tacks slightly (in the archives we get the history that books are made of, with less potential for bands of screaming children), but clearly BC’s past focus on promoting libraries as important community centres has worked out well. I quite enjoyed discovering just how rich the history of BC’s libraries and librarians is, and I feel that this book does a particularly good job of showcasing the true character of the people in BC who made an impact on the libraries’ early years and throughout their development. It was also wonderful how almost every library in the province was featured at some point - from the groundbreaking architecture of the Central Vancouver Branch to the smallest bookmobile, and even the brand new mixed-function building that serves as the new North Kamloops Branch!… (más)
