- Arthur Ney was born to a middle-class Jewish family in Warsaw, Poland. He had a beloved older sister, Eugenia. His parents Pola and Jerzy both worked in their dry cleaning business, and Arthur spent a lot of time with his grandmother. He was nine years old when the Nazis invaded his homeland in World War II. He and his family were confined to the Warsaw Ghetto. Arthur became adept at smuggling wares in and out of the Ghetto by the time he was 12. His father bought a dead Polish Christian boy's identity papers for him to use, and when the Ghetto Uprising began in April 1943, Arthur was on the other side of the city. He went to live on a farm under his assumed identity for about a year, and then returned to Warsaw, where he realized that his whole family was gone. He lived for a while in a Catholic orphanage. He joined the fight against the Germans during the Warsaw City Uprising in 1944. After the war ended in 1945, he continued to live under his assumed identity because of anti-Semitism in Poland, until he managed to emigrate to Canada in 1948. There he was finally able to live under his true name and share his story with the world. He settled in Montreal and married Susan, with whom he had a son. Arthur eventually became self-employed, selling furniture. After Susan's death, he married Kathleen Connors, with whom he had another son. Arthur was dedicated to Holocaust education and frequently spoke to students about his wartime experiences. His memoir, W Hour (French translation, L'Heure W), which he began writing immediately after the war, recalls the code name for the Warsaw Uprising. It was published in 2014 as part of the Azrieli Foundation Series of Holocaust Survivor Memoirs.
