Claude D. Newby, a native of Tennessee, joined the Army in 1952 at the age of 16 years. He requested the infantry, got Ordnance & then fought his way into the Infantry, only to be made a combat medic upon his arrival in Berlin, Germany to begin his first overseas assignment. Nine months later he mostrar más transferred to the Military Police Company (Horse Platoon). Newby separated from the Army in 1958 & moved with his family to California, where he served for a while as a correctional officer at Alcatraz. Between 1960 & 1964, he served as a police officer for the City of Ogden, Utah while earning a Bachelor's degree. In 1965, after one year of teaching high school-level religious classes, he was commissioned a first lieutenant & in January 1966 he returned to active Army service as a chaplain. Chaplain Newby retired in 1993, having served 33 years on active duty over a period of 40 years, including two tours with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. The first tour, September to September 1966-67, he served with the medics (three months) & 2-8 Cavalry Battalion. The Second tour, March to March 1969-70, he served with the 1-5 Cavalry Battalion (while concurrently supporting the 2-12 Cavalry Battalion) & the 1-9 Cavalry Squadron, which included H Company 75th Rangers & 62nd Infantry Platoon (Tracker-dog Detachment). Between his enlisted & commissioned years on active duty he squeezed in a year as a Special Forces A-Team medic in the National Guard. Newby completed high school in 1957 via the GED program, received a Bachelor of Science from Weber State College, Ogden, Utah in 1964. He subsequently earned two masters of Arts degrees, the first in sociology in 1974 from Long Island University & the other in journalism from Brigham Young University in 1981. Newby married the former Helga M. S. Raasch in Berlin, Germany. They have seven children, six of whom are living & 31 grand & great-children. Chaplain Newby's combat award & decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, three Bronze Stars for Valor & two for service combat, an Army Commendation for Valor, three purple hearts, an Air Medal, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry & the Vietnamese Honor Medal. He is one of two chaplains to receive the Combat Infantry Badge while serving as a chaplain & the only one to do so in the Vietnam War. (Bowker Author Biography) mostrar menos
