I feel compelled to put a review of this book on LibraryThing. Now, this is clearly not something very many folks will ever need to acknowledge the existence of, but if you need it, then you NEED it. I recently finished a Mineralogy/Petrology class and I can tell you first hand that this thing is a lifesaver in the rare instance that your academic life depends on deciphering a thin-section slide filled with a jumble of mystery minerals that can only be seen through a microscope! An example? Sure, why not. Ever try to distinguish calcite from aragonite from dolomite, all variations of carbonate minerals? No?
