Fritz Mühlenweg (1898–1961)

This story takes place in Mongolia. Fritz Muhlenweg went on three expeditions in the early 1930's into Mongolia and so his observations are firsthand and accurate about what life was like then. The main characters are two young boys who go outside the gates of Peking to fly their kite and accept a ride on a train which does not let them get off, from there they meet a General Wu who asks them to carry a letter for him to a Governor in another province on their way back home. He gives them a driver and a car but much happens to them on the way. It is a very exciting story full of intrigue and daring. I found it particularly compelling how incredibly polite the Mongolians are to one another. It was a fascinating story and I highly recommend it.… (más)

„Großer Tiger und Christian“ ist Fritz Mühlenwegs großer Jugendroman, der auf Erlebnissen des Autors während seiner Reisen in die Mongolei beruht. Das Buch hieß früher „In geheimer Mission durch die Wüste Gobi“ und besteht aus den früher einzeln veröffentlichten Teilen „Großer-Tiger und Kompaß-Berg“ und „Null Uhr fünf in Urumtschi“ von 1950.
Mühlenweg reiste mehrfach in die Mongolei. Er nahm an den Vorbereitungen zu Sven Hedins letzter Expedition teil (1927/28) und reiste 1929 bis 1930 sowie 1931 bis 1932 erneut in die Wüste Gobi.
Das Buch schildert eingebettet in eine spannende Geschichte die mongolische Kultur und Lebensart, die es mittlerweile in dieser Art wohl nicht mehr gibt. Grosser Tiger ist ein chinesischer, Christian ein deutscher Junge. Beide leben in Peking. Sie wollen eigentlich nur einen Drachen steigen lassen, doch sie geraten auf eine abenteuerliche Reise, bei der sie viele Abenteuer erleben. Das Buch ist spannend und detailreich. Es kommen viele unverwechselbare und interessante Figuren und Geschichten vor, ein Personenverzeichnis wäre mitunter nicht schlecht.… (más)

Abso-lu-tely brilliant. Two boys (one chinese, one german), get in the way of an army when trying to fly a kite in the outskirts of Peking. They get dragged all over China to Mongolia during the civil war, and learn about mongolian culture and language in the process. "Are you sitting well?" - Let the story begin... Written shortly after the second world war, this book draws extensively from the experiences of the author as a co-traveller of Sven Hedin in the 1930s. Translated into English and French.
The Libelle edition of 1993 deserves a special mention. Beautiful cover, special typeface and a number of drawings and photographs really stand out compared to the abridged pocket book editions of the 1980s.… (más)
