Biografía breve
John A. Murphy is currently Emeritus Professor of History at UCC. After graduating with BA and MA degrees from UCC he took up a teaching post at Farranferris diocesan seminary. In 1960 he became an assistance lecturer at UCC and then secured a Professorship in 1971. From 1977-82 and from 1987-92 he served in Seanad Eireann as an Independent Senator on the NUI Panel.

A focused overview of Irish political history between 1918 and 1975, this book probably wasn't the ideal introduction to Irish history as it picked up shortly after the Easter Rising and assumed familiarity with that event's significant figures. After a little difficulty and some quick research, I became increasingly engaged. In spite its academic tone the book is quite readable.

This is an excellent book bringing together a number of diverse commentators focusing on one specific aspect of de Valera's diverse career in politics. The book is wide-ranging covering the partition issue, economic development, law and order, the communist scare and reviewing de Valera's leadership throughout this time. Worth reading, in particular in my view, are the chapters by Valiulis, Keogh, Raymond and Fanning concerning Fine Gael reactions to de Valera, the communist scare, economic development and the rule of law.… (más)
