This is book 4 of 6 in the series; while it helps to read the previous books, there is a quick reference to previous events so readers can catch up with this story. The series is ideal for young adults, the writing is young, easy to read, and swift: there are no questions asked and anything said is accepted at face-value. The book reads like The Black Cauldron, narrated from Hailey's point of view.

The books can be read as standalones, but a lot nicer to read the series since the first book opens up to Cain's first introduction to the Vilokan Asylum ten years earlier and the prologue provides the context for the series, then every story gets darker and tougher. Ultimately, readers follow the original sinner grow as a werewolf and psychologist, treating patients at Vilokan as well as fighting battles. Reunited with Abel, Cain is haunted by his past and helps those in the present to turn around from sin. As a first-person narrative, readers get intimate insight into Cain's perspective. The stories use religion as inspiration to bring Cain to life - with the irony Cain isn't a religious man - additionally looking into soft romance and the fantasy realm of werewolves, vampires, and angels. A very pleasant series to read.
