John Stuart Mill, Classical economist, was born in 1806. His father was the Ricardian economist, James Mill. John Stuart Mill's writings on economics and philosophy were prodigious. His "Principles of Political Economy, With Some of Their Applications to Social Philosophy," published in 1848, was mostrar más the leading economics textbook of the English-speaking world during the second half of the 19th century. Some of Mill's other works include "Considerations on Representative Government," "Auguste Comte and Positivism," "The Subjection of Women," and "Three Essays on Religion." John Mill died in 1873. La primera mitad me parece magistral, con clarificadores ejemplos de la importancia de los discrepantes e incluso de los extravagantes en una sociedad sana. De aquí saca el autor, por ejemplo, el "principio de subsidiariedad" (aunque no lo llama así) o la necesidad de un Estado reducido a sus dimensiones estrictamente necesarias. Claro que, después, Mill empieza a bajar de los principios teóricos a la realidad, y empiezan las excepciones, los matices y los distingos. Y, al final, uno se sorprende de la cantidad de cosas de las que tiene que ocuparse un Estado a estilo de este profeta del liberalismo. Él mismo, honestamente, parece dudar de la posibilidad práctica de establecer un límite entre las acciones que solo le afectan a uno y las que afectan a los demás (estas últimas son sobre las que la sociedad, o el Estado, puede e incluso debe intervenir); llega a dudar de que las primeras existan en el mundo real. Yo, por mi parte, no lo dudo: todas nuestras acciones afectan a nuestro entorno. Son formas distintas de ver la vida.… (más)
